Highway ramp metering
Highway ramp metering is the nowadays replacement for highway police and instead of going to decongest traffic jams at main road exits and feeder roads, the police force can now be put into proper use. The metering, of course meaning measure, can be fixed to allow vehicles to enter the highway after a set duration of time. Likewise, it can also be designed to respond to certain conditions only. The metering logic can for example be set to be triggered by the actual jam log caused by vehicles waiting to enter the highway. This is not preferable because this metering logic is not exactly foolproof and it can be triggered by other conditions as well causing havoc on the roads, albeit rarely.
Research and daily improvement on this ramp metering is going on day and night; and very soon, the world will see foolproof signals and lights at ramps that will be activated by the traffic without failing. This improvement will ease congestion of traffic; therefore, reducing fuel wastage because vehicles consume fuel more efficiently when they are on highways compared to when they are in jam logged roads. When engines burn fuel efficiently, that means there are less carbon emissions into the atmosphere and so we make the world a greener place.
